2019 Cloud Computing Update: New Products, Tools & Terminology
As hard as it seems, 2020 is half-a-year away—and cloud computing is accelerating its proliferation as the new decade approaches. In researching the state of cloud computing for 2019, the story is not about adoption rates but rather about the expansion of new “as a service” offerings, new tools and new terminology that are arriving on the scene.
From the standpoint of new services, it appears that the goal is to achieve EaaS (everything as a service). But for 2019, the list seems to be comprised of the following:
- Cloud Business Process Services (BPaaS) (new)
- Cloud Storage Services
- Cloud Business Intelligence Services (BIaaS)
- Cloud Application Infrastructure Services (PaaS)
- Cloud Application Services (SaaS)
- Cloud System Infrastructure Services (IaaS)
The number of offerings is sure to grow as the cloud steadily creeps into the fabric of business and society. What is likely to get confusing for some is that there are non-cloud “as a service” offerings out there like PMaaS (project management as a service) that are based on outsourcing entire projects to project management teams.
It appears that “as a service” is quickly becoming a synonym for outsourcing. So just because it has an “aaS” designation doesn’t mean it has anything to do with cloud computing. Maybe GaaS (gardening as a service) or
