7 Golden Rules of Quality Audits

What is a quality audit?

  • According to A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide), a quality audit is a “structured, independent process to determine if project activities comply with organizational and project policies, processes and procedures.”
  • The Auditing Technical Committee (ASQC) has a similar definition: “A planned independent and documented assessment to determine whether agreed-upon requirements are being met.”
  • Remember Philip B. Crosby’s definition quality? It is “conformance to requirements – nothing more, nothing less.”

In a nutshell, an audit determines just that—a level of conformance to requirements of a system, process or product. The requirements can be company policies, standards and procedures; or norms and regulations, government specifications, etc.

Let’s take a closer look at the different parts of these definitions…

1. Quality audits are structured and planned. The preparation stage of an audit begins with the decision to conduct the audit. During the quality audit planning phase, the purpose of the audit and scope are defined, as well as the standard against which the audit will be conducted.
