8 Project Management Lessons from Watching Nature
Introduction
One of my favorite pastimes is to watch nature videos on television, in particular the National Geographic channel or BBC America, and compare my life with what I see, trying to learn some lessons from them. With the onset of COVID-19 and work-from-home and stay-at-home initiatives, I began watching a lot of Sir David Attenborough’s documentaries. I love the way he explains the closely woven network of nature around us and how we all must join hands to survive, and if we fail to do it, perish together.
Over the last few months, I had the opportunity to watch nightly “Planet Earth” videos, Disney channel’s “Serengeti” series, and a couple of other programs on these channels. I felt that there are a great many truths to be found in the videos from a project management point of view and took note of what I saw and learned. This article mostly is my attempt to document a few good lessons in project management that I learned from watching these nature programs. Various articles I consulted in preparing this manuscript are given at the end and may not all directly point to the videos but do show or link to the websites that host the videos. After reading this article, for an interested reader, I enthusiastically recommend these videos to understand the lessons in depth.
