8 Techniques for Using Subcontractors That Deliver Effectively

Abstract
I have worked with subcontractors for almost 15 years, and I have had a wide variety of experiences. I have also been a subcontractor, so I have a balanced view of both sides of the house. Subcontractors are all different with different cultures, work ethics, internal processes, and styles. When you work with subcontractors, they become an extension of you to your clients. They represent you and your company. A subcontractor could play a minor role or a major role, but at all levels you want them to deliver quality and to continue your good name and good standing.

Whatever the subcontractor does or doesn’t do, as the project manager, you and your organization will take the credit or the blame for it. I personally prefer credit to the latter. Subcontractors, just like employees, can either be a joy or a nightmare, but you can impact which it will be. This article provides eight techniques for using subcontractors that deliver effectively.
