“To maximize the benefits of disruptive technologies, project professionals must embrace how artificial intelligence and game-changing tools can empower them for the future”. That’s a quote from PMI’s Pulse of the Profession® 2020, and it’s pretty clear. Artificial intelligence (AI) and modern tools have to be a part of how today’s project manager operates. Is that your reality right now?
I’m guessing for most of you, the answer is no. There are many reasons for this, but the bottom line is you need to be able to overcome the various barriers that are preventing you from being more prepared for the project-driven economy of the future.
It’s not just leadership
Let’s get the elephant in the room out of the way first. Whenever I talk to organizations about why they aren’t doing a better job of leveraging modern tools and technology, one of the first things that is mentioned is that business leaders aren’t supporting those tools. That may be a refusal to invest in them, it may be a lack of belief that they will help, or it may be because the need isn’t being recognized. There is some merit to that argument. I’m more than ready to acknowledge that many leaders are skeptical of the need to invest in AI and other modern tools to aid project delivery. But it’s not because of the technology.
