Navigating Real (Estate) Complexity
The world in which we live and work is rapidly changing in so many ways that in 2013, PMI published its Pulse of the Profession™ In-Depth Report: Navigating Complexity, which was followed in 2014 by Navigating Complexity: A Practice Guide. These helped project managers deal with the many issues this can cause.
PMI ascertains that complexity can impact three areas:
- human behavior
- systems behavior
- ambiguity
While many of us can think of how any one of these three facets of our environment are impacted by complexity, I experienced all three at once last year during the sale of our home and the purchase of a new home. Allow me to describe how this unfolded and the lessons I gained from each experience.
Although we enjoyed our modest home in a nice neighborhood for 19 years, we had often talked about downsizing to a smaller but nicer home in a nicer neighborhood. In the spring of 2017, the housing market in our Midwestern city was hot. Increased demand and low inventory drove bidding wars between prospective buyers. One home within three blocks closed $20,000 over the asking price.
At some point I realized that this was our opportunity to sell our home for a good price. I also realized that I had put off several remodeling projects that were needed to bring our home up to date. Our realtor informed us that if we wanted the best return on our investment,
