Can COBIT Be Used as a Mechanism for Sustainability?

Mike Donoghue is a member of a multinational information technology corporation where he collaborates on the communications guidelines and customer relationship strategies affecting the interactions with internal and external clients. He has analyzed, defined, designed and overseen processes for various engagements including product usability and customer satisfaction, best practice enterprise standardization, relationship/branding structures, and distribution effectiveness and direction. He has also established corporate library solutions to provide frameworks for sales, marketing, training, and support divisions.

The Control Objectives for Information and Related Technology framework (also known as COBIT) was designed as a tool to help managers develop connections between core IT processes regarding technical issues and business risks so that governance personnel (stakeholders, such as executive leaders) can successfully carry out key policies and procedures.

Created by the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA)—an independent, nonprofit association that helps with the development, adoption and use of internationally agreed upon information system practices—it functions as a guideline to help ensure that standards, control and dependability are incorporated into an organization’s information systems.

Similar in some ways to the ITIL, ISO 27002 and NIST frameworks, COBIT helps enterprise IT executives produce the maximum added value to their business through all of their IT investments while also mitigating risks and optimizing resources. The ITIL framework differs from COBIT in that ITIL IT services are managed across their lifecycle, whereas COBIT helps IT governance (not management) efforts on an organizational level. COBIT has also been adopted across the globe as a model to help business process managers promote information system integrity.
