Scrum Framework Team Roles and Transitioning to an Agile Approach

Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to provide an update to the article that I authored entitled “Scrum Framework Team Roles and How Project Management Activities are Distributed,” published on PMI’s Knowledge Shelf on 20 December 2017, based on new information. It gives details on each role within the Scrum framework and describes the project management activities defined within the Project Management Institute’s A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK^® Guide) performed by that role (PMI, 2017).

A new section has been added regarding the organizational environment that needs to exist to transition to an agile approach. Ways to move to agile are also discussed, including use of a gradual incremental hybrid approach. Such topics as the following are addressed in the new section:

• Organizational readiness to transition to agile;
• Benefits of being agile;
• Adopting agile principles that are applicable to your situation for a gradual incremental transition; and
• Agile practices to demonstrate immediate business benefits.

This information is relevant to project management because it helps to determine how a traditional project manager can transition into a scrum team on an agile project using the Scrum framework or other agile approaches.
