A PM’s Guide to Digital Policy

Project management thought leader Joy Gumz once said, “Operations keeps the lights on, strategy provides a light at the end of the tunnel, but project management is the train engine that moves the organization forward.”

Indeed, project managers will be much needed to deliver on the digital-first strategy that 89 percent of organizations have adopted or have plans to adopt, according to IDG’s State of Digital Business Transformation report.

Once we have a defined project management methodology and tools to help propel us forward, we still need a strong set of digital policies to make digital-first strategies a success. Project managers are well-positioned to help define these guardrails as the organization begins to undergo its digital transformation.

Whether your organization is already in the digital-first strategy group, or if it will tread there in the coming years, now is the time to define the digital policies that will align your project execution to your digital-first strategy. Digital policy is influenced by the size of your business, whether you operate internationally, your business sector, and more. But there are five areas of digital policy that all organizations should consider:

  • Analytics and metrics collection
  • Privacy
  • Regulatory/Compliance
  • Security
