Are You Selling Yourself?

When it comes to selling, project managers do not involve themselves. Most project managers either get a project when it's sold (and they must run the manufacturing of it), or they run a project where the result is sold. Rarely does a PM do the selling of the product or service. There is a salesforce, department or person for that job.

But selling is not solely about a physical item in exchange for something. Ideas, a mindset and goals can be sold as well. Think of an organization trying to sell a motto. Even though there are separate divisions with senior managers performing different aspects of the industry, this organization wants a “one organization” motto. Projects with many divisions working together are the goal. No competition exists across division lines. Use each other for resources and support.

This idea of “one organization” is being sold. How well it sells depends on the messenger and the execution of the idea. You can say one thing, but if you act in opposition, is that idea going to be rooted in your organization? Of course not.

The same concept applies to your team and yourself. You must create buy-in from your team. Sell your team on the idea of this project being necessary to reach the goals you have set forth. Also, the personal goals you have need to have buy-in from you. If you do not believe, who else will?
