Benefits of Project Management Training to Leaders of the Nonprofit Sector

Abstract
Project management is a field that is well established within the for-profit sector and offers a variety of career paths as well as potentially lucrative positions. The importance of the Project Management Professional (PMP)^® certification is slowly being recognized by the nonprofit sector as well; however, the support for attaining this designation within the sector and the well-paying positions are not following as quickly. This paper will explore the benefits of a PMP certification for nonprofit leaders, specifically in the hopes of both increasing awareness within the sector and recognizing the value that this designation holds.

Introduction
The Project Management Institute (PMI) cites six types of personal competencies In the Project Manager Competency Development Framework – Third Edition (PMCDF). These “personal competencies are those behaviors, attitudes, cultural influences, and core personality characteristics that contribute to a person’s ability to manage portfolios, programs, and projects” (PMI, 2017, p. 11). The six personal competencies outlined in the PMCDF (p.13) are as follows:

1. Communicating
2. Leading
3. Managing
4. Cognitive Ability
5. Effectiveness
6. Professionalism
