Creativity: The Tool You Need to Make a Difference

If someone who knows nothing about project management observes a training class for new project managers, they could be forgiven for thinking that the role was just one continuous stream of processes. From kickoff to post-mortem, there is a series of connected tasks all designed to create an effective project delivery environment. It’s like a production line for projects.

But even the greenest of PM rookies knows that they can’t succeed simply by following every step without making a mistake. The difference between success and failure are the nuances in the application of process, the creativity the PM shows in overcoming problems, and the ability of the team to respond to that creativity to deliver a positive outcome within the framework of how the project needs to be delivered.

But how can a new project manager, with no experience of applying the standard processes (let alone of being creative around those processes), hope to succeed? The last thing they want is to get into trouble for not applying the standard approach the organization has established. But they also want to do whatever they can to make the project successful within those parameters.
