Creativity Through the Knowledge Areas

Creativity is more than thinking up fantastical solutions to business problems, or working in an agile start-up where every day is comprised of blue-sky thinking.

Creativity can be an everyday thing, and it makes us better project managers when we try to embrace new and novel ways of getting work done.

As project leaders, we get better results when we think creatively—and encourage our teams to do the same. But what does “being creative” look like if it’s not always about brainstorming with colorful sticky notes?

Below, I’ve gone through each of the project management knowledge areas as defined by A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide)—Sixth Edition and looked at just a few of the ways you can squeeze a bit of creativity into what you do every day (yes, even if you don’t think you’re a creative person!).

Integration Management
Project integration is about making sure all the different strands of a project hang together correctly so you can see the bigger picture. For me, this knowledge area is a lot of common-sense stuff about ensuring everyone has a clear understanding of what is going on.
