Don't Be Too Hasty: Smart Career Decisions Need the Right Environment

I have no right to write this article. I have no right to tell any of you what you should do with your careers. But I get asked by many of you to provide advice at various points, so that is what I am going to do here. Not in response to anything specific, but because I am becoming a little concerned about some of the things I am hearing and reading, and believe I need to speak out about it. (You are of course free to ignore this as the rantings of a grumpy old man!)

The first half of 2020 has caused all of us to re-evaluate our lives. Everything that we took for granted has been disrupted, and while many of us are now in areas of the world where restrictions are beginning to ease, the “new normal” isn’t looking very much like the old normal. Every industry has experienced significant disruption, and every industry has more disruption to come.

When we think about our careers, there is a lot of uncertainty. Whether you are one of the fortunate ones who has been able to continue working (albeit in a different way), or whether you are one of the people who has lost their employment because of the major financial impact of the crisis, you are inevitably facing significant change in what it means to be a project manager.
