Growing older makes you more prudent. As Jordan B. Peterson shares in his bestselling book 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, knowing the dangers of jumping on handrails while riding a skateboard without protective equipment is enough to convince us that we shouldn’t do it. We know the dangers because we have experienced the pain and suffering of failing. Those learning experiences made us better.
Those kids skateboarding need to experience the same pains to learn. Also, safety precautions make the activity less fun. For some, the thrill of skateboarding lies in its inherently dangerous nature. Without the risk, the reward is not as great.
Adding preventative measures after the fact doesn’t help. Think of building a brand-new park with beautiful concrete benches that line a water feature. Skateboarders see this as another fun obstacle to conquer. Because of this, the parks department puts large blocks every few feet to deter skateboarders. Now, this once beautiful centerpiece has ugly skateboard-proof blocks all over it.
This story was adapted from Peterson’s book. One of the chapters discussed not interrupting skateboarders and using it as a metaphor for learning. Without the trials and tribulations of attempting, failing, hurting yourself and eventual success, skateboarding does not have the same attraction.
