During Disruptive Times, How Do You Invest in Yourself?

Every month, I write about career development on ProjectManagement.com. And this month, that represents a bit of a challenge.

The world is in the grip of something that none of us have ever experienced before. In this age of a global economy, we are being forced to isolate ourselves as nations and individuals. Commerce is shut down completely in many industries, and some of us are effectively confined to our homes for most (or all) of the time. And none of us can be sure how long this will last for. I’m sure for many of you, your career seems pretty low down on the list of things you’re concerned about.

That’s understandable. But the reality is that there is very little that any of us can do in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of us suddenly find ourselves with more time on our hands and fewer distractions to spend that time on. So, while I’m not suggesting that your career is more important than the health of you and your loved ones, I am going to suggest that many of us have a unique opportunity to invest some more time into our careers. And that’s not a bad use of that time.

Even if you are still working full time, the chances are that you are doing so from home so have cut down on the commuting time, freeing up a part of your day to invest in other things. And some of you are already finding that the amount of work you have is …
