The webinar How to be a Chameleon in Your Project: Changing Your Management Style to Lead a Successful Project received so much feedback, we didn’t have time to cover everything! The discussion continued afterward, and here Emily covers some additional questions and answers that came out of her presentation.
1. How can you feel the “pulse” of an organization?
There are a few things you can do. I like to listen to discussions around the coffee machine and lunch room. This can give you an indication of the “vibe” of the employees. I would also discuss with your team members what is important to them, and their motivations. If your organization has newsletters/PR material, this can also help to see what’s going on.
2. How do you integrate contractors/outside vendors into the culture of the organization?
I would recommend focusing on team building and bringing the team together as “one team” rather than a “them and us” mentality.
3. How can you socialize with the team if it’s not co-located?
There are a few things that you can do: a “virtual” social event like “Friday afternoon drinks” or something similar via video conferencing. I would also recommend bringing your team onsite regularly to socialize with your team and hold team-building activities.
