Strategy—especially changes in strategy—have a bad reputation. Executives disappear every few years to dream up new strategies. They come back to the office with thick binders full of ideas and vision. Then what happens? A crisis strikes—a major client has a problem, or a competitor starts stealing market share—and the strategy starts to disappear. Before long, the imperative to execute the new strategy has wholly disappeared.
You can play a role in bringing strategy to life and keeping your organization moving toward its goals. How do you bring those ideas to life in your day-to-day work as a project manager? Use the steps laid out in this article, and you will be aligned with the strategy.
But first, a word of warning to the strategy skeptical. Strategy implementation might seem like the “flavor of the month” to some professionals. I urge you to reconsider that view. Think of strategy implementation in these terms if it helps: alignment. By implementing strategy, you never have to lose sleep over questions like, “How come my executive sponsor never shows up at project meetings?”
When you are implementing an important part of the company’s strategy, your project sponsors—and company leadership as a whole—will be keenly interested in your project’s success.
