Let me set a scene: You’ve been working in your current position for a few years and are doing a great job. You’re getting impressive reviews and are well respected by your peers. But you start to think: “What’s the next challenge?”
Do you know the right way to go? Do you know how to plot the next step in your career—and what will be best for your long-term worth? In this article, I’ll take you through a few steps to ensure your profitability and worth in an ever-increasing competitive landscape.
First, why does this matter? It’s vital to have an effective career plan to make sure that you can remain relevant and employable—and have options for your future. As a coach, I’ve seen several examples where project management professionals have not taken their career path or goals into consideration for several years (or even decades)—and suddenly realize that they’re boxed into a role or industry with limited flexibility when it comes to new opportunities.
You also need to realize that the project management market is becoming increasingly competitive, and knowing how to sell yourself becomes even more important. The role of networking and self-promotion has risen in priority over the past few years as more and more professionals move into the profession.
