Identifying and Managing Technical Project Risks

Abstract
Planning for the mitigation of project risks is an important aspect of project management, but it is especially important for complex software projects. Risks for these types of projects can be divided into two categories—project risks and technical risks. Project risks must be differentiated from technical risks to ensure the software is well designed and functional for the end user. A potentially avoidable technical risk of the En Route Automation Modernization (ERAM) software development project is discussed, and the probable causes of the technical risk are highlighted, along with a treatment plan that could have reduced the risks earlier in the project.

Introduction
Project risk is inevitable and must be managed to the maximum extent possible. Risks for certain types of projects can be divided into two categories—project risks and technical risks. A project risk is any risk that may be encountered during the life cycle of a project. A technical risk is any problem that could occur after project completion because of improper design (Fontaine, 2016).
