I'm a PMP®…Now What?

It’s official. I took a PMP® boot camp, passed the exam and I’ve become a Project Management Professional. Now what? What are the expectations of me from those that work with me? What are the expectations of me from those that live with me? And what are the expectations I have of myself because of this achievement?

Many of us go into this pursuit with agendas that aren’t necessarily linked to verifiable expectations of our performance. These agendas may range from enhancing our employability, improving our professional value or fulfilling organizational requirements.

But do we truly look at it from the perspective of servant leadership? Do we value the value that this way of thinking, planning, decision making and problem solving brings to others? Do we understand the expectations of the certification?

In my estimation, the pursuit of the certification represents a change—and like all changes, it should be evaluated for its proposed impact. So where should we begin with the evaluation? For me, it began with reading the Project Management Institute’s Code of Ethics, specifically the aspirational standards.

Reading this code opened my eyes to the realization that there were different expectations of my thoughts, my behaviors and my performance. The four pillars of responsibility, honesty, fairness and respect clearly articulated how …
