Project complete! Time to celebrate and start prepping for the next project. But Jennifer is clueless as to her next assignment. No one has said a word. With a smile on her face, she knocks on the office door of the PMO director.

She is surprised to see the HR director in the office, and is shocked when the PMO director says, “I’m sorry, Jennifer. Senior management decided to cut back on the project initiatives.” This was the third time in 10 years that Jennifer’s corporate PM position was eliminated at the project’s end. Maybe it was time to think about work differently. Maybe she should consider becoming her own boss, working as an independent project manager. But where should she start?

The Rise of the Independent Worker
The rise of the independent worker is changing the future of work for many of us. The reasons for the rise vary, but as a society we’ve moved into what some observers label the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Technology innovations and creativity, improved communications (including digitalization) and an evolving global competitive environment have led employers to adjust their employee needs. The need for people to work on the factory floor has been replaced with project-oriented work that has peaks and valleys.
