New Practitioners: Keeping Pace with Change

Kevin Coleman is a highly skilled senior level project and program manager/advisor with experience leading projects with labor budgets ranging from a few hundred thousand dollars to multi-million dollar budgets across multiple industries.

As a new practitioner, there is one thing you can count on: continuous change. It is something you must address throughout your career as a program or project manager. This is a very tough profession, and it is likely to get tougher year after year (and that rough road is not just for new practitioners).

But just as difficult as this field is, it is equally rewarding—bringing something new into existence that may benefit people, companies, society and perhaps the entire world. The increasing challenge of change and need for continuous learning are two of the more common reasons why many professionals choose to do this. Perhaps it is what has motivated you as well. Being here shows you are serious and on your way.

After a fair amount of deliberation and looking back over a few decades of work, here are the top 3 “do’s and don’ts” that hopefully provide some guidance on the path ahead for new practitioners:

  • Do take the time to seek advice and feedback from those that demonstrate value.
  • Do build time to learn into your personal/professional schedule to understand life/work.
  • Do continuously avail yourself of quality continuing education in this highly changing environment.
