Project management software hasn’t changed much over the years. Sure, it’s become simpler to manage and administer, it’s become more intuitive and sometimes the logic over automatic task scheduling has even made sense. But essentially, it’s the same basic set of features that have existed for a very long time.
That’s okay, because the fundamental elements of project management have remained the same—if it’s not broken, there’s no need to fix it. What has changed, and continues to evolve, is the software around all of that core project management software.
That’s diversified in numerous different directions. There’s the various agile tools of course, and numerous workflow and automation engines that either overlay the PM software or integrate with it. Then there are the graphical reporting tools, the apps that offer different levels of insight into project information or that provide different ways to analyze the data.
Then there’s the project portfolio management software that adds in all of the planning, modeling, portfolio-level financial management, etc. Not directly related to project management software, but certainly impactful, are the expansion of BYOD (bring your own device) and BYOA (bring your own app) strategies than enable project managers and team members to interface with projects in any …
