Sustainability Through Metrics

Al Taylor is an independent IT contractor in Ontario, Canada.

As a project manager, you are focused on sustaining key variables such as your project, your client’s business, your profession and your career. In this article, we look at several of these variables and suggest that there are different approaches to evaluating how you are doing.

Some of the variables can be measured with holistic approaches, while others can be measured by transforming data into metrics; we will refer to this latter set as data-driven variables.

With respect to sustaining your client’s business, I will defer that discussion to other members of this forum who are more focused on organizational strategy and other key business variables

Let’s start with a variable that we can measure in a holistic way: your career. It’s safe to assume that you enjoy your profession, and that it is more than a job. You enjoy being responsible and accountable for the delivery of important company initiatives. You are high energy and thrive in the pressures of projects.

If this is not the case, then you probably would not be on this forum. Many of you are probably in the prime of your career, or just entering your prime. A question we need to ask from time to time is whether or not our careers are sustainable.
