Sustaining Operations During Severe Weather

Resources must be available for projects to be completed. You routinely manage for vacations, holidays, sickness, family needs and so on, but what about severe weather events?

They are likely to impact your project resources with loss of electricity, evacuations and worse. So, it’s a good idea for you to be prepared for these events. The trick is to prepare so that these events are less “unique”—and to work within the framework of the project management process.  

Plus, they are becoming more common in affecting project team members’ abilities to be available and/or productive. Events such as…

  • tornadoes
  • high-intensity hurricanes or monsoons
  • periods of prolonged or heavy rain followed by flooding

…result in loss of electricity, internet/Wi-Fi, homes, workplaces or just the ability to work. The weather events might occur on another continent from where you manage a project but still disrupt an entire team that is actively completing project work.

Of course, you cannot stop these events or build them into your schedule in advance. What you can do, however, is make simple preparations so that when they are forecast, you can anticipate the impacts quickly and respond in an effective manner consistent with the project management process—and look good in the process.
