I’m old enough to be skeptical whenever someone promises me that a “new thing” is going to completely reimagine something. I tend to think that’s just bad salesmanship, and the reality will inevitably be anticlimactic.

But digital transformation is different. It really will redefine work (heck, it’s already redefining work). And naturally, it’s also going to redefine project management. So as ProjectManagement.com focuses on the digital future this month, I want to explore what that might mean for the future of project management.

Let’s dream a little and look at how some of the things that are already occurring might change the way we manage projects (who knows, maybe we’ll become a catalyst for some innovation in our discipline). I am sure some of these ideas will result in a few raised eyebrows, but they could happen—and personally, I think they should happen. Ready for a crazy journey?

Let’s start with something that’s almost certain to happen—completely remote project delivery. That is, the entire team—including the project manager—are remote from one another and from their organization.
