The Project Management Demand Explosion

“On an annualized basis, employers will need to fill nearly 2.2 million new project-oriented roles each year through 2027.”

That’s a quote directly from the latest PMI Project Management Job Growth and Talent Gap Report. It’s one of a number of stunning revelations that outline just how important project management continues to be for organizations in all industries and all major economies.

In many ways, the report is encouraging for those of us who have committed our careers to project management—it’s personal validation of course, but also reinforces the belief that the work we do actually makes a difference to the organizations we work for and with.

There’s another side to this story, however, and it’s in that part about needing 2.2 million new project-oriented roles. Where are those individuals going to come from? I mean, it’s not like there is a whole pool of project managers sitting around waiting for opportunities to open up. In fact, one of the other key findings of the report was that there is a talent gap between the demand and the available supply.

We need to acknowledge that not all of the roles required will be project managers. There will be other project-oriented job titles in the mix as well, and some of the roles will only have a part-time need for project management skills to supplement other …
