Emerging technologies have rapidly become a major strategic innovative business driver—thus increasing new stresses and demands on organizations requiring nearly immediate transformation.
The advancement of technology has forced business and technology strategies to become heavily intertwined—much greater than ever before. Deloitte recently stated that the role emerging technologies are playing has become the “catalyst for business strategy and transformation.”
Based on executive briefings I had earlier this year, approximately 20% of an organization’s technology budget is being applied to creating new and unique business capabilities. The impact is substantial—and likely to continue to grow. New business and technology roles and responsibilities are becoming common within most organizations.
These new roles, responsibilities and emerging technology capabilities are also causing changes in many organizational structures. Clearly, the new role of emerging technologies is forcing a substantial transformation of work within organizations. This will also undoubtedly impact program and project management.
Insight: There is little doubt that emerging technologies will transform many current work activities—and the required skills of the workforce.
