Topic Teasers Vol. 102: Enterprise Embedded Analytics

This is a little embarrassing. I’ve been assigned a project to create “embedded analytics” for my company and I’m not exactly sure what they are. I have heard of business intelligence. Is that the same thing? Do I work exclusively with our software team, with an outside firm or with all the internal departments? I don’t think this is covered in A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide).

A. Business intelligence and embedded analytics are two titles that define the same thing. This is the information that only the high-level C suite executives need in order to choose the appropriate strategic objectives for the organization. Work exclusively with the software team. It will know what to develop and you won’t have to expose your lack of knowledge.

B. Providing dashboard features so that most all of the employees in your organization can easily access data already analyzed—presented in a way that might help them find patterns and allow them to make better decision more quickly, avoid risk and spot opportunities—is now known as embedded analytics. Your company will need this ability to remain competitive.
