Topic Teasers Vol. 117: Keeping up With Emerging Technology

I am more in the manufacturing or fabrication part of project management, but often my teams and I are working with an IT team to create a hybrid product. It’s not that I need to do their work, it’s just that sometimes I feel stupid when I talk to the other team because I don’t understand some of the terms they are using. Or, once they explain them to me…I knew that idea all along, but I had heard it called by another name. How can I get a quick glimpse of what new ideas I need to know and what they are called without spending too much of my already overbooked day researching what to even learn?

A. The project management world expands so rapidly that it is impossible for any one person to know all of the terms and topics that are being added to the field. Just be sure you know what you need to do today’s project at your own organization. Most of the other buzzwords and topics will prove to be short-termed and you really have no need to know them.
