Want to Innovate? Eliminate Project Management

I got excited when I saw that this month’s topic on ProjectManagement.com was innovation. I figured that gave me an opportunity to be innovative in what I write about. A colleague described some of my more innovative ideas as “sheer lunacy,” but I’m going to stick with innovation. So, in this article, I want to address something that really is an innovative response to the challenges organizations face today. I want to propose eliminating project management all together (gasp!). That’s pretty innovative, don’t you think?
I know PMI says that project management is becoming significantly more important, and I know project management is becoming a skill that more and more professions expect their practitioners to have. I also know that there are more projects than ever being approved because organizations are transforming ever more rapidly in response to global competition and technological innovation. In fact, it’s because of that increasing number of projects—and the associated increasing speed of delivery—that I think project management is becoming obsolete. Let me explain…
